James Edward Sebrell: The Man Who Built a Virginia Legacy
James Edward Sebrell (1833–1924) was more than just a local leader; he was a “prism” through which we can see the massive changes in Virginia during the 19th century. Over his 91-year life, he transformed from a scholar and physician into a soldier, legislator, and the namesake of a town. His story is one of resilience, moving from the old world of plantation aristocrats to the industrial age of railroads and modern government.

The History of Franklin Lodge
Franklin Lodge No 151 is a product of four different Lodges. Mt. Olivet Lodge No. 25 (), Berlin Lodge No. 42 (), Somerton Lodge No. 99 (), and Acacia Lodge No. 84 () can each give to the history of Franklin Lodge. The distance of each of these Lodges from the Franklin area and the mode of transportation in the year 1855 gave rise to the need of a Lodge in Franklin. On February 13, 1856 Brother Stephen G. Darden, Secretary of Mt. Olive Lodge No. 25 submitted a petition to the Grand Lodge of Virginia for a Lodge in Franklin. There were eleven other signatures on the petition. All but one of these eventually joined Franklin Lodge. The name of the Lodge was left blank on the petition with the choices being Franklin or Seaboard. The charter was granted on December 10, 1856, with twenty-eight charter members.

Some of the smaller country Lodges I fear are not flourishing. BErlin Lodge, No. 42, has been in a declining condition chiefly only to unfavorable location, but the Brethren have determined to remove their Lodge to Ivor, upon the Line of the A. M. & G. E. R. which change, it is believed, will greatly promote its prosperity without interfering with that of any other Lodge.

Boykins Lodge, No. 287 A.F. & A.M. In Celebration of Its First 50 Years

Attempting to compile a history of fifty years for Boykins Lodge #287 is impossible without going back in history to the beginning of masonry in Boykins. Brethren in 1877 first brought the light of Masonry to Boykins Lodge No. 64 was formed and chartered in that year by men whose names are not only recorded in Masonry, but in the political and religious annuals of our town. To these brethren who ignited the spark of friendship and brotherly love, we give thanks. They were small in number - fourteen brethren in all. Nonetheless, though dim at times, a flame was ignited by them and it continues to burn today. Dues were three dollars per year and degrees were five dollars for entered apprentice, five dollars for fellow craft, and ten dollars for Master Mason degree. On January 25th, 1982, the Masonic Lodge moved into a new lodge hall, located on the corner of Virginia Avenue and Broad Street. This building is known to us in this generation as the apartment house in which Mrs. Susie Beaton lived. There was no report from Lodge #64 to the Grand Lodge from 1892 through 1896, and the charter was surrendered and the new lodge hall was sold. The flame of masonry in Boykins was extinguished for a number of years. From 1896 until dispensation was granted in 1904, there was no lodge in Boykins. Under a new number (287) and with the following station officers:

Lodge Mergers
It is not uncommon for Masonic Lodges to merge or consolidate when they can no longer meet all the requirements to be independent. Once agreed by both Lodges and the Grand Lodge, the Brethren are one body, one Craft, one – without distinction.
Three times Courtland Lodge No. 85 has welcomed Lodges in distress to merge with them:
| Lodge | Location | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Newsoms Lodge No. 128 | Newsoms, VA | 19?? |
| Widow’s Son Lodge No. 150 | Emporia, VA | 2020 |
| Boykins Lodge No. 287 | Boykins, VA | 2024 |
The culture, however, is one membership, one now and forward, three new histories to enrich Courtland Lodge’s.
